Photographer Chen Wei

Chen Wei was born in 1980, in Zhejiang Province, China. Currently he lives and works in Beijing, China. In his early career, he used to deal with experimental music and later turned to photography. Chen Wei's photographs are believed to express his inner thoughts and emotions. Most of his works are finished in his studio.Conventionally, the first generation of Chinese contemporary photographers tend to capture the scenes and installations as how they are, while Chen Wei's photos are different in that he uses cinematic settings and the subjects and articles in his photos are put together on purpose instead of what they naturally look like. Such means of photography is believed to be informed and inspired by the Western masters like Jeff Wall, Cindy Sherman, Gregory Crewdson, etc. Chen Wei’s photos contain the imagination of dreams and the movements and scenes that are impossible in daily life and histories are brought to us in his works. Modern and contemporary literature have served as his reference and inspiration. His works enjoy a controversial reputation: some think highly of the fantasy while others regard it as a conceptual trick.
