Photographer Gert Jochems

Gert Jochems (1969, Antwerp) went seven times to Russia and stayed one year in total. The pictures we show in Edit: come from his book RUS, commissioned by the Museum of Photography in Antwerp and published in 2005. The photos are his impressions of his stay in Russia and, specifically, Siberia. They present an estranged society floating between the past and the present. The black and white photographs can be considered as a document that expresses the terrible conditions of the situation. He offers us his personal viewpoint as an astonished passer-by in this territory. The color photos serve as a travel report; sometimes they seem to be the setting of his incredible journey. The photos are harsh and without compromise, but Jochems is a humanist photographer. He presents an honest vision of reality.
His photos are distributed by l’Agence Vu.
