For Vincent Fournier, work is like a childhood dream: traveling to far away places that look like they’re far, far away, and then taking beautiful pictures of them. Inspired by the adventures of Tintin, the films of Stanley Kubrick, and the documentary style of Jeff Wall, the Paris-based artist has taken his future nostalgia to Mars research stations, space labs, and surreal amusement parks, where he attempts to capture something of our strange, fanciful relationship with technology.
In the latest episode of VBS’s Picture Perfect series, producer and space nerd David Feinberg (“Space Shuttle Parking Lot”) met Fournier at NASA’s Kennedy Space Center, where, like a nature photographer in pursuit of a rare bird, he aims at his ultimate subject: the wonderful and controversial and tragic space shuttle, sitting on the launch pad, ready for that one final shot.
