photographer Alejandra Laviada

Alejandra Laviada lives and works in Mexico City. Her work explores photography's shifting role and relationship to other artistic media, such as paintng and sculpture. The images she creates emerge from the intersections between these different disciplines, and aim to question and redefine photogrphy's various roles and boundaries.
For each project, Alejandra occupies a differetn site in Mexico City that is in the process of being completely demolished or redeveloped. She photographs her interventions in these spaces, and works only with the objetcsshe finds in each place. The images alter our conception of everyday objetcs, and reflect a city in transition, struggling to reconcile past and future histories.
IN 2010, Alejandra won Mexico's Photography Biennial, and in 2009 was awarded the prestigious Photo Espana Descubrimientos Prize for her Photo Sculpture series. Her work has been exhibited widely, incuding the New York Photo Festival, Art & Commerce's PEEK Festival for Emerging Photographers, and the Hyeres Photography Festival in France. IN 2009, Alejandra was named one of American Photo's Emerging Photographers of the Year. Her work has also appeared in variuos publications, including The New York Times Magazine, T Magazine, Wallpaper, American Photo among others.
Alejandra receieved her MFA in Photography from the School of Visual Arts in Mew York, and her BFA from the Rhode Island School of Design. She is a member of the photography collective POC (Piece of Cake: http://www.pocproject.com/)
