Photographer Gonzalo Bénard

Living and working in Spain, Portuguese born artist Gonzalo Bènard explores the power and influence of memory in his work. From the times, as a child, when he would nap in front of Hieronymous Bosch paintings through the years spent living and studying at a Tibetan monastery-school, he uses his personal experience to create highly imaginative work including paintings, drawings, photography and, most recently, video (still in project).
Surreal, occasionally bizarre, provocative, conceptual, often ironic, Gonzalo Bènard mixes cultures, rites and rituals, life and death. Encompassing everything human his work speaks of faith, sex, spirit and what it is to be alive and trying to make sense of a world that cannot make sense of itself.
Gonzalo Bènard’s work is to be found in both public and private collections from Europe to Australia, and his growing reputation has led to several high profile commissions.
